From book to film to stage show to television series, it seems that American Psycho is the story people just can’t get enough of.
Eight years after it was first rumoured that the story of Patrick Bateman would be adapted for the small screen, Lionsgate Television chairman Kevin Beggs told Deadline that a TV series based on the film is officially in development.
“We’ve just wrapped up Dear White People which was a really good experience, Blindspotting is coming up, American Psycho is in development,” Beggs said.
The book — and subsequent 2000 film starring Christian Bale — tells the story of Bateman, who is a wealthy New York investment banker by day and a sadistic serial killer by night.
Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Josh Lucas, Chloë Sevigny, Samantha Mathis, Cara Seymour, Justin Theroux, Guinevere Turner, Reg E. Cathey and Reese Witherspoon also appeared alongside Bale.
Meanwhile, American Psycho — The Musical is coming to the Sydney Opera House’s Playhouse beginning June 3, 2021, and starring Ben Gerrard. The production returns after a successful season at the Hayes Theatre Co. in 2019 that earned the musical an impressive nine Sydney Theatre Awards.
So far, it’s unclear what angle the television series will explore, although previously it had been reported that an FX series based on Bret Easton Ellis’s book would follow Bateman in his 50s grooming a protégé to satisfy their bloodlust.
No announcements have as yet been made as to who has been cast in the project or to what degree Easton Ellis will be involved.
