Australian Idol is finally back on Channel 7 following a 14-year hiatus and, let me tell you, the first few episodes have brought back waves of early 2000s nostalgia. Seeing the hundreds of auditioning contestants has been a phenomenal flashback with a classic mixed bag of incredible to don’t-quit-your-day-job.
Aussie radio personality; Kyle Sandilands, is returning to the judges’ desk well-equipped with his blunt commentary for the contestants (and even his fellow judges — Meghan Trainor, Amy Shark, and Harry Connick Jr). Sandilands’ feedback brings a familiar touch of drama and cattiness to the show. He naturally takes on the ‘says what everyone’s thinking’ role without a hint of sugar coating.
According to press materials, when it comes to passing criticisms, the Idol judge says he focuses more on the big picture and whether the performer has what it takes to be a commercial success. Sandilands’ direct judging style has drawn backlash, but he argues that it’s necessary in the cutthroat music industry.
He is also no stranger to the world of reality TV, having been a judge on other popular shows like The X-Factor Australia, and Australia’s Got Talent.
Outside of his judging stints, you can find him entertaining audiences with his unique humour on KIIS 106.5‘s, Kyle and Jackie O Show. Alongside Jacqueline Last AKA Jackie O, the duo has co-hosted the often-controversial programme for over two decades, with Sandilands racking up 48 Australian Commercial Radio Awards for his work on the air.
When asked about creating a lasting career in the music space, the Idol judge mentions the importance of maintaining relevance and that making smart song choices is “vital”. Of course, this works hand-in-hand with first securing a record deal.
He goes on to detail that, “A lot of people think getting signed to a record deal is the hardest part of being in the music business. Nope. What’s really hard is remaining on top, because when you’re on top, there’s really only one way you can go: down.”
In addition to his media career, Kyle is a successful entrepreneur who runs his own production and investment company, King Kyle. The company has interests in a diverse range of industries, including music, television, radio, retail, and tech.
