Baked Oats Are Trending on TikTok: The Perfect Autumn Breakfast

baked oats

You know we love a TikTok food trend — maybe, depending on what it is (looking at you nature’s cereal and hot cross bun burger). The latest, that we actually won’t tear to shreds? Baked oats.

If you’re wondering what baked oats are they’re, um, oats that have been blended and baked (with other ingredients). Is this what Leonardo Decaprio meant when he famously questioned “What’s in a name?”. But back to the oats, the best thing is that they look and taste just like cake. Except these are indulgent, yet healthy (the best kind of combo), and a great breakfast option.

Australian TikTok-er, @cookingwithayeh, sent out a video to her 594k followers, extolling baked oats as the new trend, one that she’s “totally down for”. In the video, she shows other users how to make her vegan-friendly honey almond baked oats.

User @emilygracefood has also jumped on the trend with a salted caramel version; @vegbitez has a chocolatey one.

If you are looking for a slightly healthier kick to the day, nutritionist Kathleen Alleume suggests sticking to a balance of seasonal fruit “to add flavour and natural sweetness, and healthy proteins.” For autumn and winter, she recommends stone fruits like nectarine, apricot and plum, or citrus fruits like grapefruit and orange.

Looking for a boost of protein? Baked oat recipes often incorporate eggs, “which can incorporate high-quality protein.” In addition to this, you can add an extra boost with nuts, “like flaked almonds, crushed cashews, or a dollop of your favourite nut butter.”

Want to make some of your own? Don’t worry, we’ve got you sorted — with three different options.

Almond and Banana Baked Oats

Ingredients

  • 1⁄2 cup Uncle Tobys Traditional Rolled Oats
  • 1⁄2 ripe banana
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoon almond milk
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Melted coconut oil or cooking oil spray
  • Handful flaked almonds Garnish
  • Fresh sliced banana
  • Drizzle of almond butter
  • Maple syrup (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F
  2. Blend oats in a high-speed blender to create a fine oat flour
  3. Add the banana, egg, milk, cinnamon, baking powder, maple syrup, vanilla and salt into the blender and blend for 10-20 seconds until well combined. It should be a thick runny cake batter-like consistency.
  4. Grease a small ramekin by brushing melted coconut oil or cooking spray, making sure to coat the bottom and all the sides
  5. Pour the batter into the ramekin and gently tap it on the kitchen benchtop to flatten the top
  6. Add the flaked almonds to the top evenly and place in the oven for 25 minutes.
  7. Remove and check if it’s cooked all the way through by sticking a toothpick into the centre. It should come out mostly clean with a few crumbs. If it’s still wet, it may need an extra few minutes depending on your oven strength.
  8. Let it cool for 10 minutes then garnish by adding some sliced bananas, a good drizzle of almond butter and dig in!
