After a mostly virtual ceremony in 2020, the Emmys were back for 2021 with an in-person, (fully vaccinated, of course) event to celebrate the best of the best in television.
In the category for Outstanding Comedy Series, Black-ish, Cobra Kai, Emily in Paris, Hacks, The Flight Attendant, The Kominsky Method, Pen15 and Ted Lasso were all nominated, making the category a particularly tricky one to pick.
However, it was Ted Lasso that took home the coveted comedy gold.
This year, the comedy race was wide open, given that last year’s runaway winner — Schitt’s Creek — ended its glorious six-season run in January 2020. The beloved Canadian sitcom swept the 2020 ceremony, taking home every award it was nominated for and making history for winning every award in the comedy category including Best Comedy, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy — Annie Murphy — Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy — Dan Levy — and Best Actress in a Comedy — Catherine O’Hara — among others.
Winner Ted Lasso, starring Jason Sudeikis, earned 20 nominations for the 2021 event, with the heartwarming series breaking records by becoming the most nominated comedy series this year, and the most nominated freshman comedy series in history.
The show follows Lasso as he re-locates from the US to the UK after landing a job as the coach for a flailing football (soccer) team which is being run by new owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), who is determined to destroy the club to get revenge on her cheating ex-husband.
Although his cheery American persona goes down like a lead balloon at first, Ted slowly starts to win over all of his new English friends with charm, kindness and lots of homemade biscuits.
The second season is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
Emily in Paris once again was recognised at a prestigious awards show, after the controversy of it being nominated for a Golden Globe while Michaela Coel’s searing I Will Destroy You was snubbed.
Coel was nominated for Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for I Will Destroy You, while the show itself was nominated in the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category.
