The Brisbane lifestyle was made for the farmer’s market. With sunshine year-round and an established coastal lifestyle, most Brisbane residents spend their mornings stocking up on fresh produce at farmer’s markets. It also helps when the city is surrounded by beautiful farmland, which has landed covers in magazines and is talked about frequently in the restaurant industry.
Dotted far and wide across Brisbane, we spent our weekends scouring the city for the five best farmer’s markets you don’t want to miss.
Brisbane City Markets
Under the watchful eye of the grand St John’s Cathedral is Brisbane City Markets, one of the city’s favourite markets. Local farmers flock to the city to flog their produce straight from the farm. There are also fresh flowers by the bunch, candles and giftware from local artisans. Marketgoers can stock up on fresh pasta, cheese, jams, seafood, and meat. After shopping, sit down for lunch. You have your pick of delicious street food stalls, slinging everything from sandwiches to spicy paella.
When: Thursdays, 8 am to 2 pm
Laidley Village Markets
Venture to the Lockyer Valley for some fresh air and provisions. This country market is popular with city-dwellers looking to escape the county jungle. Apart from boxes of giant pumpkins, hand-sized gourmet tomatoes and other fresh vegetables and fruits, visitors will find homemade treats often made by the farmers. Think jams, honey, and sometimes, cake or baked goods are available. This market is also a popular spot for arts and crafts and books.
When: Fridays, 7 am to 1 pm
Carseldine Farmers and Artisan Markets
Over 200 vendors set up at Carseldine Markets in North Brisbane. Although, most who come here make a day of it. There’s live music and activities for kids, plus a huge seating area where marketgoers can relax or nibble on fresh fluffy pancakes and other street food. Hop from stall to stall, smelling and tasting the fresh fruit and veg, as well as exploring the many other offerings, including arts and crafts, homewares from designers, baked goods, baristas, juicers, and other artisan-made goods you won’t find in a mall.
When: Saturdays, 6 am to 12 pm
Jan Powers Powerhouse Farmers Market
This particular market occurs over three areas: New Farm, Manly, and Mitchelton. You can expect an eclectic display of Queensland’s best produce at every location. Sitting alongside farm-fresh fruit and vegetables are warm bread and baked goods, fragrant spices, premium pantry staples, sustainable seafood and the best cuts of meat perfect for your next backyard BBQ. Food trucks serve up smoothies, coffees, and snacks to keep market-goers fed throughout the day. Dogs are welcome as long as they’re on a leash.
