‘Chaos Walking’ Stars Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley Had an “Awkward” First Meeting on a Flight to Montreal

Chaos Walking

Sci-fi flick Chaos Walking lands in cinemas on March 4 — bringing the first instalment of Patrick Hess’ trilogy of novels to life.

Directed by Doug Liman, the film is an adaptation of The Knife of Never Letting Go from the series and stars Spider-man and Avengers actor Tom Holland alongside Star Wars alum Daisy Ridley.

It’s been a long time coming for the blockbuster — it was first announced in 2011 and has undergone multiple rewrites and even reshoots, following negative reviews from audience test screenings, not to mention premiere delays in response to the pandemic.

The film takes place in a not-too-distant dystopian future in which all females have mysteriously disappeared — which makes you wonder how anything gets done in this new world.

Meanwhile, the men on the terrain are affected by a curious force called “The Noise” which puts all of their thoughts on display and, well, the jokes just write themselves for that one.

Jokes aside, the plot centres around Todd Hewitt (Holland) as he discovers Viola, a girl (Ridley) who mysteriously crash lands on his planet and promises to protect her from harm. As Viola’s life is threatened, Todd will have to discover his own inner power and unlock his planet’s dark secrets.

Complicating matters further is the fact that having always believed that women were wiped out long ago by a deadly pathogen that also unleashed “The Noise”, Todd is frustrated to discover he can’t hear Viola’s thoughts while she can hear his. I know what you’re thinking, but I promise you — this is not a comedy!

While Ridley and Holland are sure to wow audiences with their joint onscreen presence, the circumstances of their first meeting were slightly less engaging.

Speaking to AP Entertainment, Ridley revealed that after encountering each other briefly at the 2017 BAFTAs, their first official meeting during a long flight where they were seated opposite each other.

“We met the night that Tom won his BAFTA and it was so weird because we both knew we were doing Chaos Walking but we didn’t know when and we didn’t know how,” the actress said.

“It was actually hilarious, because we met again on the plane to Montreal but we were in those seats that face each other and you know like it’s super awkward when you don’t really know someone?

“So we would put the screen up slowly and then the screen takes ages to go up and you’re like, ‘oh my god, so awkward’ – but no, it ended up being great.”

Nick Jonas also stars in the $100 million dollar film, along with Cynthia Erivo, Mads Mikkelsen and Demian Bichir.
