Award season is in full swing. After announcing their television nominees last week, the Critics’ Choice film nominations were announced on Wednesday, December 14.
Leading the way is the Daniels’ runaway hit, Everything Everywhere All At Once, which managed to pick up a whopping 14 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and five nods in the acting categories. Following Everything Everywhere was Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, with 11 nods, also including Best Picture, Best Director and five acting nods.
Behind The Fabelmans came Damien Chazelle’s Babylon and Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, which scored nine nominations each, with Elvis and Tár being recognised in seven categories apiece.
“We are so proud to be recognising this incredible group of films and the people who made them possible,” said Critics Choice Association CEO Joey Berlin in a statement. “This recognition comes from a diverse group of more than 600 critics and entertainment reporters who share their opinions about film and television with millions of people every day, all year long. Our collective opinion about the year’s finest achievements is truly meaningful to the creative community.”
Over in the television nominations, ABC network sitcom Abbott Elementary is leading the way with six nods, with the final season of Better Call Saul just behind it with five nominations.
Other shows that did well this year include the Julia Roberts-led limited series Gaslit, as well as Reservation Dogs and The Good Fight. Each of these shows nabbed four nominations a piece.
“As we embark on holding the 28th annual Critics Choice Awards, we are amazed by the wealth of remarkable television programs that were considered to become this year’s nominees,” said Critics Choice Association TV Branch co-president Ed Martin in a statement.
“Clearly, the industry has rebounded in a big way. We look forward to honouring the year’s finest shows and performances at the upcoming awards ceremony.”
The Critics Choice Awards will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2023, at the Fairmont Century Plaza hotel (which will be Monday, January 16 in Australia).
