Disney Plus is about to expand its selection of Marvel offerings.
The streaming platform has announced that all the former Netflix-Marvel series’, which include Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher and The Defenders will land on Disney Plus on March 16.
It’s welcome news for fans of the shows, which were all removed from Netflix on February 28th, after Netflix’s licensing deal with Marvel ended.
The end of that contract saw the streaming rights returned to Disney, who owns Marvel, despite the fact that the shows were originally sold as “Netflix Originals”.
Prior to the launch of Disney Plus, each of the series were cancelled between 2018 and 2019, but the seasons remained on Netflix until the end of February 2022.
Also in the contract was a stipulation that prevented any of the shows or characters from appearing in any Marvel Cinematic Universe content outside of the Netflix/Marvel offerings for at least two years after cancellation.
As we pass the two-year mark on these shows, it’s possible that many of the characters formerly bound to Netflix will begin to pop up in other MCU franchises.
In fact, we’ve already seen one character’s return. November 2020 was the two-year anniversary of the cancellation of Daredevil, and last year, fans saw Charlie Cox reprise his role as Matt Murdock in a Spider-Man: No Way Home cameo.
“Disney+ has served as the home for some of the most beloved brands in the industry, and the addition of these live-action shows brings more from the Marvel brand together, all in one place,” said Michael Paull, President of Disney Streaming, in a statement.
“We have experienced great success with an expanded content offering on Disney+ across our global markets and are excited to continue that here in the U.S. as well by offering our consumers not only great content with the new Marvel additions, but also a set of features that help ensure a viewing experience most suitable for them and their family.”
