From Basic but Still Nice to Seriously Bougie, 5 of the Best Places to Stay in Fremantle

Pier 21

The port city of Fremantle — or “Freo”, as the locals call it — is a 30-minute drive from Perth, and certainly worth a visit if you’re dropping into Western Australia. It’s got a rich maritime history, plenty of examples of Victorian architecture and an almost equal number of bars and breweries, most notably Little Creatures, which started in Freo.

But where to stay while you’re there? Fortunately, Fremantle’s got a wide range of places to stay — and, fortunately, none of them are too pricey. From boutique hotels on the main drag in the city to a glamorous, restored hotel with just 12 suites and a rooftop bar, these are five of our favourite stays right now in Fremantle.

The National Hotel Fremantle is an intimate property, with just 12 rooms, each uniquely styled with a Parisian feel. Six of the rooms have French doors that open onto a private balcony. The hotel also has a rooftop bar where you can catch one of Western Australia’s famous sunsets, a restaurant with a wrap-around verandah and a traditional pub that plays live music daily.

Hougoumont Hotel

Hougomont Hotel is a boutique hotel right in the heart of Fremantle, meaning it’s walking distance to some of the city’s best cafĂ©s, art galleries and museums. A stay highlight is the daily Togetherness Hour where you can strike up conversation with the hotel’s chatty crew or other guests over cheese and wine. In the morning, tuck into complimentary morning tea and toast from nearby craft bakery Bread in Common in the lobby.
