Is the Queen’s Birthday still a public holiday in 2023? It’s the question on many lips of those in Commonwealth realms that celebrated the day this year, the first since Queen Elizabeth II’s passing on September 8, 2022.
The answer is yes, the places that previously celebrated the Queen’s Birthday will still have the day as a public holiday moving forward, despite the monarch’s death (side note: her birthday was actually June 21). Though, as in previous years, the public holiday’s date is different across the states and territories in Australia.
In the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory, the Queen’s Birthday falls on the second Monday in June. In Queensland, it’s the first Monday in October. And in Western Australia, it’s usually at the end of September or at the beginning of October, though, the last two years have seen it happening on the last Monday in September.
Is It Still Called the Queen’s Birthday?
No, it’ll now be called the King’s Birthday, after King Charles III, the reigning monarch. His actual birthday is on November 14 by the way.
When Is the King’s Birthday in 2023?
So, when is the King’s Birthday in 2023? For those in Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory, they’ll be treated to a long weekend in June. The King’s Birthday public holiday will fall on Monday, June 12.
In Western Australia, though, the governor actually proclaims the holiday each year, as mentioned, either the end of September or the beginning of October. This year, the King’s Birthday in WA falls on Monday, September 25.
Queensland is the other state that doesn’t celebrate the Queen’s (now King’s) Birthday in June. Like WA, it has it later in the year. In 2023, the King’s Birthday public holiday in QLD falls on Monday, October 2.
