And then there were four. MasterChef Australia: Secrets and Surprises has no doubt delivered this season. We’ve had ups and downs, but knowing that the end is almost here is a bittersweet feeling. With that said, tonight’s episode is going to push the contestants to breaking point, when the one and only Peter Gilmore returns to the screen with another torturous pressure test. We all remember the snow egg, right? Well, this time around, the four remaining contestants will have to recreate a Gilmore creation — without a recipe. The competition is tough, and only the best will make it through.

Who Is Peter Gilmore?

It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes, you get that one person who has always known who they wanted to be when they grew up. That person is Peter Gilmore. From the age of 16, Gilmore dove right into an apprenticeship, which allowed him to work in restaurants around the world and in NSW, where he developed his signature, back-to-nature culinary style.

In 2001, Gilmore took the helm of Sydney’s Quay Restaurant and has never looked back. Named the best restaurant in Australia multiple times, Gilmore has cemented the spectacular harbourside restaurants’ reputation in the culinary world.

What makes him a success is not only his skill and natural talent but his approach. His food is inspired by nature, with Gilmore being a passionate gardener himself. He experiments with unusual and heirloom vegetables, playing around with flavours and textures for the menu. He even handpicks all the local producers and growers, working with them to grow unique fruit and vegetable varieties exclusively for the restaurant.

In addition to running Australia’s best restaurant, Gilmore has released several cookbooks, including Quay: Food Inspired by Nature published in 2010, Organum: nature, texture, intensity, purity in 2014, and most recently, From the Earth: the World’s Great, Rare and Almost Forgotten Vegetables in 2018.

What Other Restaurants Does Peter Gilmore Run?

In 2015, The Fink Group, who owns Quay, signed a 10-year tender for the iconic Bennelong Restaurant inside the Sydney Opera House. Here, Gilmore spins his culinary magic, creating an ever-evolving tasting menu for diners.
