The story tells the story of Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis) and Melvin (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.), four veterans who go back to Vietnam in search for buried treasure and the remains of their squad leader (Chadwick Boseman). Accompanied by Paul’s son (Jonathan Majors), the four vets embark on an adventure that helps them confront their trauma.
Other cast members include Mélanie Thierry, Paul Walter Hauser, Jasper Pääkkönen, Johnny Trí Nguyễn, Van Veronica Ngo and Jean Reno.
In a new trailer released by Netflix (below), footage flashes between vintage video from the Vietnam War and the main characters exploring the country in their return.
It’s a powerful look at the before and after effects on war, themed by Time Has Come Today by the Chambers Brothers and heroes clips of war protests, President Nixon’s resignation speech and the four friends searching for buried treasure, ending with the emblematic fist raised in the air.
Lee co-wrote the script alongside his former BlacKkKlansman writing partner Kevin Willmott and Danny Bilson and Paul Demeo, who were the writing team behind 1991 classic The Rocketeer.
His last film, BlacKkKlansman won an Oscar for adapted screenplay, his first Academy Award.
This will be Lee’s first feature film with the streaming service, however, will mark the fourth collaboration.
The Malcom X director wrote and directed the series version of She’s Gotta Have It and directed Roger Guenveur Smith’s Rodney King.
The director is also producing the upcoming time-travel film See You Yesterday.
