Team building activities can better communication, boost morale and even increase productivity, so it’s easy to see why companies schedule them regularly. But, despite their many benefits, they tend to get a bad rap and are usually thought of as cheesy.
Fortunately, for those in Melbourne, there are plenty of team-building activities you can do there that are far from cringe. From a two-level, 18-hole putt-putt golf course, to a well-executed murder mystery, here are five team-building activities that won’t have your office wishing they were working from home instead.
Play Putt Putt Golf at The Funderdome
The Funderdome at Highpoint Shopping Centre, which opened in 2022, is home to arcade games and karaoke lounges, as well as a Coney Island-inspired, two-level, 18-hole mini golf course, called Playas Crazy Golf. Play individually or in teams, working your way through holes including The Punisher, Loop-the-Loop, and Heartbreak Hill before wrapping up with a drink and feed at The Clubhouse.
Take a Lady Cutler Melbourne Showboat
For the very large teams, opt for a cruise on Lady Cutler Melbourne Showboat, which can hold up to 350 guests over two levels. The floating venue is completely customisable, based on whatever activities you want to do, whether that’s a dress-up party or a show featuring internal or external talent. You can hire the kitchen to cook yourselves or request catering and also take advantage of the two bars by adding on a drinks package.
Do a Cooking Experience With Free to Feed
Free to Feed is a Melbourne social enterprise, offering cooking classes run by refugees and asylum seekers. The teachers share stories of their experiences as refugees, as they’ll run you through how to cook cuisines like Persian, Burmese, and Somali. Free to Feed has several options for team-building classes specifically, depending on your group size.
Complete Challenge Rooms at Hijinx Hotel
Hijinx Hotel is an interactive game experience housed in a quirky, New York-style hotel. Each room in the “hotel” has a challenge that groups of two to six players must work together to complete before they’re allowed to move to the next room. An afternoon here will see you exercising your creativity, bonding with colleagues, and simply having fun as you work together to solve problems.
Solve a Murder Mystery With Uplift Events
Uplift Events runs several themed team-building events in Melbourne, including Prison Break, City Survivor, and Corporate Olympics. The Murder in the Mansion event requires teams to think outside the box and solve the murder of 1920s fictional character Elizabeth Sutton. Each team will be armed with a briefcase containing suspect photos, a magnifying glass, and an autopsy report.
