At long last, Ted Lasso Season 3 is nearly here, and today, the trailer has dropped.
Ted Lasso has been one of the biggest hits to come out of Apple TV+ thus far, garnering critical acclaim, a huge fan base, and a slew of awards.
With the third (and likely final) season of the hit comedy series just around the corner, the trailer has finally landed.
In it, we see glimpses of everything we’ve come to love and expect from the feel-good football sitcom.
Set to the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”, the trailer teases a number of stories we’ll be following this season.
These include the upcoming showdown between Ted and Nate (Nick Mohammed), new developments in the relationship between Keeley and Roy, and of course, plenty of football along the way.
There’ll be wins, losses, and of course, plenty of displays of non-toxic masculinity. Check out the Ted Lasso Season 3 trailer below.
Why Has Ted Lasso Season 3 Taken So Long?
When Ted Lasso won Best Comedy Series at the 2022 Emmy Awards, Jason Sudeikis ended his acceptance speech with “we’ll see you for Season 3, at some point”, acknowledging the delay between Season 2 and 3 of the series.
So… why has it taken so long?
A new report from Puck News, titled “What the Hell Is Happening With Ted Lasso” published in September 2022 detailed the show’s extensive production delays, ballooning budget and a supporting cast locked into contracts they’re eager to get out of after the show ends.
Originally pitched as a three-season arc, the writers room for Ted Lasso Season 3 — supposedly the show’s final season — began in September 2021, and the cast were all set to begin shooting in January of 2022 in London, but it didn’t happen.
Instead, Sukeikis — who is not only the star of the show, but also Creator, Executive Producer and writer for the series as well — decided that the season needed to be significantly re-written. This pushed production back to March, but still, there were re-writes being done even after cameras began rolling.
In the Puck News article, Matthew Belloni details other delays: “A Sudeikis-led brainstorm led to an April location shoot in Amsterdam, where he once lived, that added weeks to the schedule. A plan to film at Stamford Bridge, home of Chelsea Football Club, was frozen for a bit when its owner, oligarch Roman Abramovich, was forced to sell the team after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The season’s final episodes, which I won’t spoil here, are upping the production stakes even more.”
Who Will Star in Ted Lasso Season 3?
It’s good news for Ted Lasso fans, because all our faves are returning for the third season.
Confirmed to be returning for Season 3 are:
- Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso
- Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca Welton
- Jeremy Swift as Leslie Higgins.
- Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard
- Toheeb Jimoh as Sam Obisanya
- Cristo Fernández as Dani Rojas.
- Kola Bokinni as Isaac
- Nick Mohammed as Coach Nathan “Nate” Shelley
- Juno Temple as Keeley Jones
- Stephen Manas as Richard Montlaur
- Annette Badland as Mae
Meanwhile, Jodi Balfour (For All Mankind, The Crown) will be joining the series in a new role, playing a character named Jack. In a press release, Apple TV+ described her character as “a charming venture capitalist”.
What Will Ted Lasso Season 3 Be About?
So far, specific plot details about Season 3 are pretty scant, but here’s what we know:
- Season 3 will dive into the characters’ backstories
- Season 3 is currently intended to be the show’s final season, which means that all the questions and loose ends from Season 2 will mostly likely be wrapped up
In an interview with PopCulture, Cristo Fernández said that “there’s going to be lots of football” in Season 3, which he’s “really happy and excited” about. Football is life, after all!
“There’s [also] really important key moments [with] all of our characters, so I think this season three, it’s going to have a really good,” Fernández added.
As for the plots we’ll likely see over the course of Season 3, well, there’s a lot.
First up, there’s the fallout of Nate’s betrayal, and how Ted will navigate that while continuing to deal with his mental health.
There’s also Nate’s offer to become the head coach for West Ham United, which came from Rebecca’s ex Rupert, and how that will impact Richmond.
Fans adore Roy and Keeley’s romance, but will they be able to go the distance? Season 2 left the couple together, but there’s a definite question mark hanging over their future as we go into Season 3.
Also in the romance department, we have the question of Sam and Rebecca, and whether sparks will continue to fly between the pair.
Where Can I Watch Ted Lasso Season 3?
Once it’s released, Ted Lasso Season 3 will be available on Apple TV+ in Australia. If you’ve missed the first two seasons, they’re both streaming now on Apple TV+.
When Will Ted Lasso Season 3 Be Out?
Ted Lasso Season 3 will premiere globally on March 15. This likely means March 16 for Australian viewers, given the time difference.
How Many Episodes Will Ted Lasso Season 3 Have?
Ted Lasso Season 3 will have 12 episode, Sudeikis confirmed backstage at the 2021 Emmy Awards.
“They, being Apple, asked for 12 episodes and this time, ahead of time,” the comedian said at the time, according to Deadline. “So, we’ll be doing 12 episodes as of now.”
Season 1 of the series had 10 episodes, and Season 2 had 12.
Will Season 3 Be the End of Ted Lasso?
Currently, it’s looking likely that Season 3 will mark the end of the beloved comedy series.
“The story that’s being told — that three-season arc — is one that I see, know, and understood. I’m glad that they are willing to pay for those three seasons. As far as what happens after that, who knows? I don’t know,” Jason Sudeikis told EW earlier this year.
“I think we’ve always meant it to be three seasons,” echoed co-star and creator Brendan Hunt, in the same interview with EW.
Hunt added that “it would be pretty cool if, in the face of how much everyone likes this show”, the team stuck to their guns and chose to end the series with Season 3.
“None of us were prepared to the degree to which people love this show”, Hunt added, noting that they’ve all been a little “discombobulated by the response”.
“I think that could make hard-hearted old Sudeikis soften up a little bit,” Hunt said. “I will say that, whatever he decides, I will happily abide.”
Could There Be A Fourth Season After All?
Look, it’s not completely off the table, but don’t hold your breath.
Sudeikis recently told ET that they’re all completely focused on delivering a third season that lives up to expectations before they’ll consider adding a fourth season.
“I feel like a real coach when I have to tell folks you can’t look at Season 4 when we’re in the middle of Season 3,” Sudeikis said. “We can’t worry about the championships when we’re in the first round of playoffs, you know?”
“It’s hard to think about what to do in the distant future when you’re trying to deal with what’s right in front of you,” Sudeikis explained.
Of the third season, Goldstein said that they were writing it to be an end to the series, saying: “It was planned as three,” before joking: “Spoiler alert: everyone dies.”
In an interview with Deadline, meanwhile, Ted Lasso creator Bill Lawrence said that “even if Ted Lasso goes on, the story the writing staff has been telling had a beginning, middle and end for the first three seasons”, so if they did continue the show beyond that, “it might veer off from that.
