The fourth instalment in the Matrix franchise will land in cinemas in December 2021 and we finally know what it will be called when it does.
The Matrix: Resurrections was announced by Warner Bros. at CinemaCon, with a clip from the film that shows Neil Patrick Harris as a therapist who is talking to Keanu Reeves’ Neo.
“Am I crazy?” asks Neo. “We don’t use that word in here,” Harris’ character replies.
According to Deadline, Reeves and his co-star Carrie-Anne Moss appeared in a making-of clip before the footage was screened, with the two actors explaining how the first film had changed their lives.
“The first Matrix felt like something beyond yourself… You’ll hear the sentence ‘The Matrix changed my life.’ I say, ‘Thank you, it changed mine too,” Reeved said.
Added Moss, “I never thought ‘Dodge this’ was going to be a big deal.”
In addition to returning stars Reeves, Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith, famous faces such as Priyanka Chopra Jonas will also be appearing.
Rounding out the cast are Christina Ricci along with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Jessica Henwick, Telma Hopkins, Eréndira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt and Brian J. Smith.
Lambert Wilson and Monica Bellucci are also said to be returning to the Matrix universe. Writer and director Lana Wachowski once again served in those roles for the upcoming film.
The anticipated follow-up to the sci-fi action trilogy was originally slated for 2022, but Warner Bros. decided to move the premiere up to December 2021, thrilling fans of the first three films.
So far, no solid plot details have been released for the film, which was originally announced in 2019, however, Reeves did tell Digital Spy in 2020 that the movie has a “beautiful script that is a love story”, adding: “It’s another version of a kind of, call to wake up. It entertains… It has some great action. All will be revealed.”
Abdul-Mateen II told the same publication that he felt the film will be extremely relevant to modern audiences saying, “I can’t say too much but it’s so relevant and touches on themes people should be talking about in 2020, 2021, 2022.
“Keanu and I have been hanging out and he’s so pumped — so I take energy from him.”
