Before starting jewellery brand Arms Of Eve with her husband Aaron, Kerryn Langer ran a wholesale business with him in LA. She’s now based in Sydney but wound up spending eight years in the City of Angels, exploring first with her American husband who’d lived there awhile already, and then on her own.
“I think most people, including myself initially, understand LA’s natural beauty,” she says. “There are so many beautiful canyons and mountain ranges to hike, and I always loved spending time at the beautiful Malibu beaches for something a little less touristy.”
Ahead, Langer shares her recommendations for where to eat, stay and play in LA. From her go-to spot for a takeaway sandwich and where she goes for the best sushi, to the best activity she liked to do to kick off the weekend, this is Langer’s ultimate guide to LA.
Best Hotels in LA
“I lived near Santa Monica on LA’s Westside and the area still feels like home to me,” says Langer. “The Santa Monica Proper Hotel would be my number one recommendation for best place to stay in LA. Its magnificent interiors exude coastal charm and it has a calming ambiance. It also has a great rooftop and is only a short walk to the beach and shops.”
Best Restaurants in LA
“I love the food in LA! There are always new incredible spots to try. My Westside favourites are still Gjelina for a farm-to-table experience or Bay Cities Italian Deli and Bakery for the ultimate takeaway sandwich. My go-to order was always the burrata caprese, it just hits the spot.
“I always get excited going back to LA for the Mexican and sushi hit. My top Mexican in the city would be Blue Plate Taco for something quick and easy. I can never resist the ceviche mixto tostadas and they do the best red snapper tacos. Also, El Cholo when grabbing a bite with the fam. They do the best guacamole and chips. And for sushi, Katsuya has the best spicy tuna crispy rice and their signature kastuya roll is a standout. Of course, NOBU is always a treat and never disappoints.”
Best Bars in LA
“My go-to bar was always Venice Beach Wines on Rose Street in Venice. It’s a great place to catch up with friends, with an intimate vibe and unique wines. Alternatively, you can always rely on LA’s rooftop bars for a fun night out.”
Best Things to Do in LA
“Where do I even start? The Venice Canals are beautiful to stroll around or Topanga Canyon offers amazing views, hiking and horse riding. For the perfect place to unwind, I’d say Lake Shrine Temple and Retreat in the Palisades is a must. Brentwood Country Mart is a bit of a hidden gem with great food and boutiques.
“And don’t forget to spend a weekend at the Farmer’s Markets. It was my favourite way to start the weekend. There’s something about being outdoors, seeing all the fresh, local produce and experiencing traditional foods from different cultures and communities. A favourite stall was Dave’s Gourmet Korean, which offers a modern twist on the cuisine. His pickled goodies were always a 10/10.”
