Apple Is Discontinuing the iMac Pro to Make Way for Something Exciting

To anyone out there playing around with the idea of a home office revamp that includes a new suite of technology, you’d better step on it and nab yourself an Apple iMac Pro stat before it’s too late. Or, if you have a little patience, you could wait for something even newer… but more on that later.

Apple has quietly announced it will stop selling the iMac Pro, first launched in 2017. The $4,999 all-in-one workstation is still available for purchase, but Apple has thrown up a “While supplies last” on the product page, indicating the computer will not be re-stocked once the supply is depleted.

According to MacRumours, this is because the iMac Pro sits within a zone somewhere between the 27-inch iMac from August 2020, and the Mac Pro, which is a slightly higher-performance device.

The news Apple will pull the product from its line comes at a time when reports are swirling around a new, redesigned iMac, which according to MacRumours, will have a next-generation Apple silicon chip and a design inspired by Apple’s high-end Pro Display XDR. Apple has already launched a new MacBook, MacBook Air and Mac Mini with new chips, and now, new iMacs are expected to arrive later this year.

We don’t know much more about the new devices, but reports would indicate the aesthetic of the iMac, which usually features thick black bezels around the display and an Apple logo positioned in the centre of the bottom, is set to leave the suite for the first time in nine years.

According to Bloomberg, the new iMacs, available in 21.5-inch and 27-inch sizes, will have a slimmer border and a flat back, which sidesteps Apple’s curved rear exterior of the current design.

Not only that, but one tech blog even reports the line-up will be getting a colourful makeover, with pastel blue, green and a rose gold design that exactly match the current colour selection on the iPad Air.
