Skinny jeans have had a long run in the sun. After dominating the 2010s, as we look towards a new decade, are they still cool? Should we still be rocking our skinnies in 2020, or is it time to say goodbye and embrace something a little more of-the-moment?
Are Skinny Jeans Still In Fashion?Â
While we’re all about embracing your own personal style, it seems like all the fashion experts might be in accordance with this one: It’s time to move on from your trusty skinny jeans. “Denim styles at the moment are moving away from slick silhouettes to more relaxed and voluminous,” fashion editor, Alexandra Stedman, told Elle. Â
This observation seems to be stop-on, reflected both on runways and street style. Where women once paired every outfit with super tight, super sleek skinnies, we’re beginning to see a turn towards different silhouettes. From mum jeans to wide-leg options, today’s chicest jeans have a little more space to move around in. Even figure-hugging flare jeans are making a return to replace the ankle hugging alternatives that took over the past decade.
While it’s easy to sense that a change is in the works, it’s often more difficult to embrace said change. If you’re feeling a bit hesitant about bidding adieu to your old favourites, you’re not alone. Famous french blogger, Camille Charrière, admitted to the same sentimentality. “’It was very hard to get out of skinnies, especially being French, but now I find it hard to get back into them,” she shared with Elle. “I think it comes with being a certain age – you look more rock’n’roll in skinny jeans, but more elegant in boyfriend jeans.”
If you’re sold on the idea of moving on to new denim styles but aren’t exactly sure about what comes next, never fear. To help you move on, we’ve rounded up a list of styles that are about to replace the skinny jean in the new decade.
What Jeans are ‘in’ Fashion Now
Boyfriend Jeans
- Khaite, Boyfriend Jeans, ($630): The lower waist and and light wash make these jeans look like a pair that would indeed be loved and worn by a boyfriend.Â
Flared Jeans
- Mother, High Waisted Runaway ($356.75) There one is debatable but we think no style is more flattering than a high waist with a flared ankle — and no one does it better than Mother. This style will elevate even a plain white tee into a high-fashion look.
Mum Jeans
- RE/DONE, 90s Cropped Distressed High-Rise Straight-Leg Jeans ($476.85): With a high waist and straight leg, these are the most flattering mum jeans out there. Keeping the looser shape without drowning you in fabric, these look cool and casual.
