Women Are Continuing to Win Big at the BAFTAs and It Could Predict the Oscars Outcomes

The 2021 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTAs) took place on Saturday and Sunday, April 10 and 11 and saw the reign of diverse nominees and winners continue to dominate awards season.

After sweeping the Golden Globes, Critics Choice and SAG Awards, Chloé Zhao’s incredible journey film Nomadland won the best film award, plus leading actress for Frances McDormand, best director for Zhao and best cinematography for Joshua James Richards.

Zhao’s best director nod saw her become the first woman of colour to win the director award and only the second woman in the award’s history — in keeping with this year’s so far historic run of awards shows in which a more diverse cross-section of people than ever before are being recognised.

Emerald Fennell‘s Promising Young Woman also won big, taking home the prize for Best British Film and Best Original Screenplay for Fennell, while 73-year old Yuh-Jung Youn won best-supporting actress for her role in Minari, continuing the winning streak for the South Korean actress.

In keeping with COVID-safety protocol, the two ceremonies were held from the Royal Albert Hall, with nominees joining virtually. The selection of nominees was praised for being the most diverse in the award show’s history with 16 of the 24 actors nominated in the performance categories coming from racial or ethnic minority backgrounds, and a record four women shortlisted for best director.
