Get Stuck Into the Best Steaks in Melbourne

Once you’ve eaten the perfect steak, that has been ethically grown and impeccably cooked—crunchy and salty on the outside, juicy and pink on the inside—there’s no going back.

With a mix of European flavours and Australian produce, Melbourne restaurants really do turn out some of the best steaks ever.

Here are the best spots for a juicy steak in Melbourne.

France Soir

South Yarra
France Soir has been a Melbourne institution since 1986, serving up elevated French bistro-style food and service on literal silver platters, white waistcoats and all. If you’re into a nice rich steak, then we all know that the French do it best. Offering multiple different cuts that vary based on seasonal specials, you can have everything from a classic rump steak to a rare veal steak, or rib eye, all with your choice of sauce and sides… and a glass of French Burgundy, of course.

La Luna Bistro

Carlton North
La Luna is Chef Adrian Richardson’s original eatery, with a cosy neighbourhood vibe and an especially cute street terrace, La Luna serves up some of the best steaks that the inner north has to offer. Their rib eye is house dry-aged, served at 550g and carved to share (or not) and its reputation exceeds its competitors. But beef isn’t the only thing on offer. They do a delicious wrapped pork or lamb shoulder too, as well as a number of other meat-based delights that are offered seasonally. So go grab yourself a spot outside, order up a fat rib-eye and an even fatter red wine, and dine ‘til your heart’s content.

Entrecôte

Prahran
Entrecôte is another staple French restaurant in Melbourne’s classic French dining circuit, and they offer up a slightly more modern experience, combining French cuisine with local Australian ingredients. Open from breakfast to dinner, there’s a steak for every occasion. Their Filet de Boeuf is a favourite among locals, a 220g Gippsland eye fillet, with bearnaise, watercress and frites (which you can actually order at any time of the day).

Angus & Bon

Prahran
If you can get past the incredible decor of this southside steakhouse, then you know you’re in for a good feast. Set in the old Prahran Post Office building built in 1928, Angus & Bon serves up New York-level service and style and a steak guaranteed to keep you coming back. They love to experiment with wood-fired cooking, constantly turning around fresh wood-grill flavours in everything from salads, to meats, to cocktails. When it comes to steak, you get to select your preferred cut—rib eye (aged 30 days), scotch fillet (aged 30 days), something locally butchered dry-aged and grass-fed for 36-months. Tuck into your chosen cut, with a delicious side of something smoked and fresh and sip on a nice wine and you’ll literally feel like you’re living your best Don Draper fantasy.

San Telmo

Meyers Pl
San Telmo is a beloved Argentinian restaurant tucked within the European end of Melbourne’s CBD, with a menu centres around the Spanish ethos that food is an experience shared between friends, family and lovers… and obviously, steak is involved. Rich with a cellar of Spanish reds and a 2.5 metre Parrilla charcoal grill, San Telmo delivers true to its roots; named after the oldest neighbourhood of Buenos Aires and in our humble opinion, boasts the best steaks in Melbourne’s CBD. They serve a bunch of different cuts, like lamb rump, pasture-fed flank steak and eye fillet, but their 500g rib eye is their most famous cut, which goes for $88, but it’s well worth it.

Bar Margaux

Lonsdale Street, CBD
Imagine this: it’s 11pm and you’ve had a few drinks, but you’re really craving a steak. All restaurants are closed. What do you do? You go to Margaux. Brought to us by the Made in the Shade team (The Everleigh, Heartbreaker, Connie’s Pizza), Margaux is a late-night French bistro, serving food, cocktails and an extensive European wine list ‘til late. They make a great steak, usually a rib eye or eye fillet, with frites and salad. Down in the Margaux basement, sipping on a vino and munching on a steak in the gorgeous interior and funky jams, you’ll thank yourself later.
Book here. You can also just walk-in.
