These days, vacuum cleaners come in all shapes and sizes. There are pizza-sized, robot vacuums that clean on their own at the press of a button. There are cordless vacuum cleaners that emit laser beams to help you better detect dust. And there are vacuums that not only suck up dirt from floors but mop them too.
So, among the seemingly endless options of vacuum brands, styles, and models, which to buy? Well, the main things you should be looking for in a vacuum cleaner, aside from its price of course, is how well you can handle it — the suction power doesn’t matter if you aren’t able to easily move it around — and how well it works on different surfaces.
Ahead, we’ve highlighted some of the top vacuum cleaners across just a few of the many styles.
Dyson Gen5 Detect, $1,599
The Dyson Gen5 Detect was launched in late 2022 and is the brand’s most powerful and expensive model to date. It’s more compact than previous models and features brighter lasers and a Hyperdymium motor that spins at up to 135,000 rpm, nine times faster than a Formula One engine. The vacuum also has a fully-sealed HEPA filtration system (which can be unscrewed for cleaning), engineered to capture 99.99% of particles like diesel soot, down to 0.1 microns.
MACH V1 Ultra, $1,499
This vacuum is the world’s first cordless stick vacuum with steam-mopping capabilities. It works on stubborn mess by first dissolving the stain and then vacuuming and mopping the surface. It’s easy to use with a lightweight design and an LCD display on its handle. And you won’t need to do much to maintain it either — its three-fold, self-cleaning system allows it to clean, disinfect and dry its rolling brush, tube, and vacuum body all at the same time with the press of a button.
LG CordZero A9 Handstick Vacuum, $1,299
Released in November 2021, this vacuum comes with a docking station that lets you store, empty, and charge it. Dust and other particles are automatically emptied when the vacuum is placed on the docking station to charge, going into a dust storage bag that you can easily replace once full. The benefit of this system is that the particles are hygienically disposed of so they won’t re-enter the air during the emptying process and ruin all of your hard work.
Dyson V12 Detect Slim Absolute Extra, $1,349
This cordless, lightweight (2.2kg) vacuum comes with two cleaner heads, five tools, and lasers that reveal microscopic dust. It also traps pet dander and allergens, and, using hair-removal vanes, detangles long hair. The Hyperdymium motor increases suction power when higher dust volumes are identified. An LCD screen shows you details of the cleaning process.
Ecovacs Deebot N8 Pro, $699
Launched in Australia in July 2022, this robot vacuum features mapping technology using laser beams, mopping functionality, and 2600Pa of suction power. The vacuum is able to detect what type of floor it’s cleaning and change its system to suit. For instance, once it’s on carpet, it’ll turn mopping off and will increase its suction power. The device can also be fully controlled by an app, meaning you can tell it to clean even when you’re not home.
