Netflix Releases List Of the Movies and Shows Australians Loved in 2019

There’s nothing we love more than a good end of year list, so when Netflix released its list of the movies and shows that Australia loved in 2019, we needed to know immediately.

As it turns out, the results are somewhat surprising. Where Netflix originals like Orange Is The New BlackRussian Doll and The Good Place were nowhere to be found, the Martin Scorsese epic The Irishman made the list, as did Chris Lilley’s Lunatics.

Here’s the top 10 most popular Netflix releases of the year:

10. Dead To Me

The Christina Applegate/Linda Cardellini dramedy dropped in full on May 3 which also happens to be the day that we binged the entire thing in one sitting. Oops!

9. Triple Frontier

This Ben Affleck-led thriller had us on the edge of our seats as we watched them fight for survival at every twist and turn.

8. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile

Ted Bundy was a big topic for Netflix in 2019 with the release of docuseries The Ted Bundy Tapes, but it was the Zac Efron biopic that had Australians gasping.

7. Stranger Things 3

The third season of Stranger Things dropped earlier in 2019 and once again dominated the cultural conversation, keeping the momentum it’s had since it first premiered. We can’t get enough.

6. The Irishman

The Martin Scorsese epic has been heavily tipped to receive a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars in 2020.

5. Lunatics

Despite receiving quite a bit of criticism for some of his characters, Chris Lilley proved he’s as popular as ever with Australians when he made the list with his latest series, Lunatics.

4. Isn’t It Romantic

Rebel Wilson and Liam Hemsworth had us feeling patriotic with their rom-com Isn’t It Romantic. Originally released in US cinemas by Warner Bros, the film didn’t do quite as well as they’d hoped, but once they sold it to Netflix to be rebranded as a Netflix original? Bam, top four in Australia. We love our people!

3. The Witcher

The Witcher was one of the most hotly anticipated shows of 2019, and despite only just being released a week ago, the high-budget fantasy series has landed at third place for the year, using predicted numbers.

2. 6 Underground

Ryan Reynolds stars in this just-released action-thriller about a group of vigilantes who have faked their own deaths in order to perform assassinations while staying off the grid.

1. Murder Mystery

Adam and Jen still have it! The duo, who also starred in Just Go With It together back in 2011, rounded out the decade by reuniting their star power and topping the Netflix charts.

Netflix also released top 10 lists for movies and television series separately, which saw the addition of shows like You season two and Unbelievable, as well as films like Aquaman and Falling Inn Love. Check out the full infographics below.
