With prices for international flights rising daily, many Australians are looking for alternatives to a dreamy European summer — preferably somewhere closer to home.
Thankfully, Australia is rich with European history, evident in the charming regional towns dotted across the country. We even have a taste of the Amalfi Coast in the heart of Sydney. Although, after binge-watching Emily in Paris, we thirst for the South of France, and I know just the place to quench your palate.
New American Express research reveals 22% of Australian adults say that they have been inspired to travel this year after watching Emily in Paris and 17% after watching White Lotus. I will be the first to raise my hand — I have a Google flight alert set for Taormina and Paris. But until prices come way down (like, way down), I’ve been fulfilling my Europe wanderlust in Australia.
The Fields
Bridestowe Lavender Estate in Tasmania’s idyllic countryside looks like it was plucked out of the South of France. As soon as you step onto the estate, you are greeted with the fragrant scent of lavender. The purple-hued fields stretch as far as the eye can see, and the view is breathtaking. Walking through the fields of lavender is a truly magical experience, and it’s quite easy to forget that you’re actually in Australia.

The owners have gone to great lengths to create an atmosphere that transports visitors to the South of France. The farm’s beautiful gardens, quaint buildings, and charming little shops all add to the illusion that you’re actually in Provence.
The Estate and Café
The main building on the estate is a homestead built in the 1800s. It has been lovingly restored and now serves as a gift shop, café, and lavender museum. The museum is particularly interesting, as it gives you an insight into the history of the estate and the production of lavender.
The café is a must-visit, especially if you’re a foodie. The menu boasts a range of delicious dishes made with lavender, including lavender scones, ice cream, and lavender-infused hot chocolate. Yes, it’s a thing, and it’s delicious. The food is all made on-site using fresh ingredients, and it’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings — as if you were in the Rhone Valley.
