After the past couple years we’ve had, comfort and stability are two things we’re craving right now. So, it makes sense that we’re incorporating both into an interior design trend set to sweep across homes in 2023: comfortcore.
“As I see it, comfortcore is about making your home a homage to mindful relaxation,” says Paola Merrill, interiors creator and author of new book The Cottage Fairy Companion. “Your space is your refuge, a tidy and cosy and welcoming haven where you feel inspired to utilise your free time to your advantage — to truly and unabashedly enjoy your time off.”
So, what are some ways you can incorporate comfortcore into your home? An easy way is to add soft linen textures and more neutral homewares and furniture into your space, says Camilla Ingall, interior stylist and founder of Sydney-based interior styling company Unfolded.

“Even replacing your bright white LEDs with warm white or trying pendant lighting,” she says. “Another idea is swapping scatter cushion and pillow inserts from polyester fill to feather fill, which adds comfort. IKEA have cheap and cheerful options for these so you only need to buy the cushion cover.”
You could also swap any polyester lounge throws for woollen knit throws, stainless steel mirrors for timber-framed ones, and generally incorporate more natural fibres, like linen and cotton, Ingall suggests. In the kitchen, you might want to get barstools with backs as opposed to backless chairs. In the bedroom, if you have floorboards, think about adding a wool blend carpet.
“Doing all of these things add up to create a calm and comfortable living or sleeping space,” Ingall says.
