Dyson has added to its vacuum range with its most powerful — and most expensive — model yet, the Gen5 Detect, which was unveiled overnight. In addition to its added suction power, the vacuum also features brighter lasers and a more compact format than previous Dyson vacuum models.
The Gen5 Detect features a Hyperdymium motor that spins at up to 135,000rmp, nine times faster than a Formula One engine, and delivers 262 air watts of powerful suction.
The vacuum also has a fully-sealed (you can unscrew it for cleaning, though) HEPA filtration system, engineered to capture 99.99% of particles like diesel soot, down to 0.1 microns. Engineers built the motor with a shorter shaft and combined multiple parts into one, allowing for a more compact format.
“The best filter cannot provide clean air if there is an opportunity for dirty air to leak out of the machine so our engineers worked hard to ensure that all our Dyson vacuums have whole-machine filtration,” says Charlie Park, Dyson’s vice president of floorcare. “In our Gen5 Detect vacuum, we went a step further with HEPA filtration to ensure that even particles as small as 0.1 microns remain trapped in the machine.”

The result of years’ worth of development — and a direct response to feedback Dyson received from its customers — the new vacuum has a re-engineered Fluffy Optic cleaner head that produces twice the laser brightness and range, so more of your floor and the microscopic dust on it can be seen.
The vacuum will also tell you when a surface is fully clean. A sensor counts and categorises particle sizes, which then correspond to bars on the vacuum’s LCD screen rising and falling. Based on this, you’ll know whether or not to move on or spend more time cleaning an area.
“The Gen5 Detect defines Dyson’s next generation of cleaning technology,” says James Dyson, founder and chief engineer at Dyson. “It is the combination of our dust list optic technology, dust particle counting and sizing, pioneering new motor and whole-machine HEPA filtration, that enables you to achieve our deepest ever clean.”
The Dyson Gen5 cordless vacuum is available from October 13 online or at Dyson Demo stores. It’ll set you back $1,499.
