The Emmy nominations are officially in for 2021 with Disney charging the lead with a staggering 146 nods.
Streaming giant Netflix, which is known for splashing out huge sums of money to acquire and create content, earned a total of 129 nominations, while WarnerMedia — which owns HBO and HBO Max — garnered 138 total nominations thanks to the two platforms.
The pandemic affected the ability of several series to be considered eligible for Emmy nominations, as production was slowed or stopped entirely on show’s such as Succession — which will finally debut its third season later in 2021. The gritty family drama tied third with Netflix’s Ozark for wins at the 2020 ceremony, winning 7 Emmys out of 17 nominations.
Leading the pack is Netflix’s The Crown and Disney+’s The Mandalorian with 24 nominations each, followed by Marvel and Disney+ hit WandaVision with 23.
Dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale scored 21 noms, while the long-running sketch series Saturday Night Live took home 21.
Meanwhile, the sweetest show to come out of 2020 — Apple TV’s Ted Lasso starring Jason Sudeikis, earned 20. The heartwarming series broke records by becoming the most nominated comedy series this year, and the most nominated freshman comedy series in history.
Happily, in the acting categories, artists of colour made up almost half of the total nominations across the categories. Mj Rodriguez, Rosie Perez, Bowen Yang and Kristen Anderson Lopez were some of the non-white performers who were recognised for their stellar performances.
In a history-making moment, Rodriguez’s nomination for her role as Blanca Rodriguez-Evangelista in Pose represents the first time a trans woman has ever been nominated in the leading actress category. Rodriguez’s co-star Billy Porter, also received a nomination in the lead drama actor category, having previously won the Emmy in 2019.
Courtney Cox was finally recognised for her work on beloved sitcom Friends, scoring a nomination for the Friends: The Reunion special, after never receiving a nom during the show’s original decade-long run. The Friends reunion also was nominated for production design and lighting design/direction for a variety special and outstanding variety special.
Actress Jessica Walter, who passed away in March, was also nominated for a posthumous Emmy Award for her voice-over work in the adult animated comedy series Archer.
The winners of the 73rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced on September 19, 2021. Read on for the full list of nominations.
