If you’ve been excitedly awaiting the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot, you should definitely check out the newly dropped trailer.
Set in modern-day America, the brand new one-hour drama series Bel-Air imagines the beloved ’90s sitcom through a new, dramatic take on Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of one of California’s most expensive zip codes. As these two worlds collide, Will reckons with the power of second chances while navigating the conflicts, emotions, and biases of a world far different from the only one he’s ever known.
The series is executive produced by Will Smith and Quincy Jones, and it promises to take a fresh and raw approach to this world of swagger, style, and aspiration while exploring Will’s point of view through a current lens.
Starring in the reboot is a talented ensemble cast that introduces Jabari Banks as Will, Adrian Holmes as Phillip Banks, Cassandra Freeman as Vivian Banks and Olly Sholotan as Carlton Banks.
Coco Jones, Akira Akbar, Jimmy Akingbola, Jordan L. Jones and Simone Joy Jones also star.
The original series ran from 1990 – 1996, turning Smith into a household name. Alongside Smith, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air starred the late James Avery, Alfonso Ribeiro, Karyn Parsons, Tatyana M. Ali, Joseph Marcell and Janet Hubert-Whitten/Daphne Maxwell Reid.
During its run, The Fresh Prince was one of three TV shows that featured an African American family.
The cast gathered in 2020 for a reunion special that aired on Stan, in which they discussed how the show was made to the overall legacy of the popular series, with Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton Banks, revealing that while the series was groundbreaking, the actors were not asked to give input into how it portrayed a Black family.
“The idea that we, as a Black show on TV — one of three at the time — there weren’t really us in the writers’ room,” he said. “As an actor, you never had a voice — you never had a voice in the room. You were a puppet who was told what to do, ‘Say this line, move over here.’”
