In 2005, Swedish author Stieg Larsson released an unknown novel called The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Within a few years, the novel had been translated to English and went on to win various awards around the world. Then, in 2011, a movie by the same name was released to critical acclaim and the main character, Lisbeth Salander, became a household name.
Due to the popularity of the book — which was part of a series of six — Amazon is now developing a television series centred around the main character.
According to Variety, the project is currently titled The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and will not be a sequel or continuation of the story previously written. Instead, the new series will place with Lisbeth in today’s world, with the addition of a whole new setting, characters and story.
Previously, Salander was portrayed by Noomi Rapace in the original Swedish trilogy while Rooney Mara took the role in 2011 for the US adaptation, followed by The Crown’s Claire Foy in the 2018 film The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
While there are no actors assigned to play Lisbeth in the new series, it has been announced that the series will be produced by Amazon Studios and Left Bank Pictures alongside Sony Pictures Television.
Before his death, Larsson completed the first three novels, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest with David Lagercrantz taking over to publish The Girl in the Spider’s Web, The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye, and The Girl Who Lived Twice.
The acclaimed series has sold over 100 million copies worldwide.
