Welcome all to a Tuesday where the news is dropping thick and fast. This means that there’s no time to waste and no time for bants. Here are some of today’s biggest headlines.
The Jan 6 Committee Wants Criminal Charges
On January 6, 2021, a swarm of disgruntled Americans invaded the US Capitol building and then failed to do an insurrection. These people wanted to overthrow this government. They believed that America’s most recent election was rigged. A big propagator of this wild lie was the president at the time, Donald Trump.
In response to this attack, the Jan 6 committee was created to determine whether or not Trump was responsible for this attempted coup. Moreover, this committee has just declared that Trump acted unlawfully, and they’re referring him to be criminally prosecuted.
“The committee believes that more than sufficient evidence exists for a criminal referral of former President Trump for assisting or aiding and comforting those at the Capitol who engaged in a violent attack on the United States,” said the US Representative, Jamie Raskin.
“The committee has developed significant evidence that President Trump intended to disrupt the peaceful transition of power.”
Trump is yet to respond to these allegations. In the past, he’s said that the January 6 committee was “illegally leaking confidential info to anyone that will listen.”
Australia Has a New and Controversial Aged Care Rating System
The aged care sector is known for being rife with neglect, substandard conditions, and even abuse. Because of this, the Federal Government launched a new aged care star rating tool, the aim of which was to sort the good apples from the bad. However, recently, this new tool has been called into question.
The gov’s rating system has awarded 91% of Australia’s aged care facilities a three-star or higher rating. Many aged care experts are confused as to why this number’s so high.
“The bar must be set very low for 90% of aged care homes to be assessed as providing an acceptable standard of care,” said Dr Sarah Russell, the Director of Aged Care Matters.
“We know there is a workforce crisis. So how is it possible for 90% of aged care homes to provide an acceptable standard of care?”
Meanwhile, Carolyn Smith, United Workers Union’s Age Care Director, said, “That certainly hasn’t been the numbers we’ve previously seen. That surprises me. I don’t think any aged worker would say 91% of providers are three stars and above.”

South Australia Was Powered By Solar For a Legit Week
In some news that slaps, South Australia was basically powered by wind and solar for seven days straight. This is because from December 12 to 19, these green forms of energy made up 103.5% of the state’s demand for power.
When discussing this situation, the Premier, Peter Malinauskas, said, “That has never occurred ever before in the history of the country.”
“That shows you the potential of having renewables in the system, giving us an energy transition but also to a low-cost future when it comes to power.”
During said week, the price of a megawatt dropped to an average of -$26.35 per hour.
