Houseplants are so much more than just décor. They can promote positive feelings when you care for them and have even been proven to reduce stress and increase productivity.
But what are some of the most on-trend houseplants, currently? Luckily for those with busy schedules, it’s those that require minimal effort to care for, according to Jane Marling of Adelaide-based plant company Plant Resort.
“With a simple watering routine and minimal pruning, these plants can thrive in any environment, even with limited sunlight and water,” says Marling. “Plus, they bring a unique look to any room, making it easy to inject a bit of colour and life into your home.”
So, what are some of those easy-to-care-for and, because of that, on-trend houseplants? Ahead, Marling shares four of them.
Giant Bird of Paradise (Streletzia nicolai)
A Bird of Paradise is a great way to bring the outdoors inside and, with its unique pattern of leaves and bright green colours, will add a touch of drama to any room, Marling says.
“This majestic indoor tree can grow up to 5 feet tall and offers lush foliage all year round,” she says. “It’s perfect for creating that tropical oasis you’ve been dreaming of, with its large leaves resembling an umbrella shape.”
To make Bird of Paradise even easier to care for, Marling suggests putting in bright, indirect light.
Olive Tree (Olea europaea)
Can’t make it to European summer? Bring the Mediterranean to you with an Olive Tree, which suits both modern and traditional homes, says Marling.
“Its delicate leaves and thin, grey branches will add elegance to any space,” she says. For best results, place it in a sunny spot and take it outside occasionally, so it can get some natural sunlight.”
Of all the plants on this list, olive trees are slightly thicker to take care of and should get bright, direct sun for most of the day. Their home is tropical Greek islands afterall.
Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)
The Snake Plant, otherwise known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, is a great choice for busy people or those who don’t have much experience with plants, says Marling. There are all sorts of varieties to choose from when it comes to snake plants.
“This hardy houseplant can survive in indirect sunlight and will thrive even if you forget to water it regularly,” she says. “It’s a good option for any home or office and adds a modern touch to any room with its unique foliage.”
ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
Finally, the ZZ Plant is another no-fuss houseplant, requiring minimal watering, says Marling.
“There are dozens of varieties of ZZ Plants, with each boasting its own unique colouring, shape and texture,” she says. “With its forgiving nature and low maintenance requirements, this houseplant will thrive in any home.”
