There’s a reason Mudgee was crowned Australia’s top tourism town two years in a row. The town beat out regional towns such as Bendigo, VIC and Mandurah, WA, which are more widely known as a destination.
The historic hamlet has a growing food and wine scene that showcases local producers, artisans, winemakers and brewers. And Mudgee’s accommodation options are top-notch as well.
The reason? Well, it’s mainly because of its food and wine, but it’s also due to its people and countryside. The town has a charming 19th-century facade, but inside its storefronts, you’ll find modern-designed boutique shops, trendy cafes, and beautifully-designed restaurants serving a style of fine dining.
Most people spend a weekend, but why not stay a whole week? Mudgee is calling, so we’ve rounded up the best accommodation in Mudgee.
Mudgee Retreats

Peppertree Hill
Set on the outskirts of Mudgee is Peppertree Hill, a collection of 10 self-contained cottages, and one oversized homestead. Peppertree is the ideal country stay, with communal fire pits to cosy up to and charming cottages with stylish interiors. Staying outside the main town does have its advantages. Guests are just a short drive from wineries and farms where you can sample produce straight from the source. A visit to Robert Stein Vineyard and Farm is a must for foodies and wine lovers. stay for a long lunch or stop in for a tasting. Peppertree Hill also has its own restaurant, Pipeclay Pumphouse, serving seasonal dishes, with local ingredients.
If you’re travelling with a big group, Peppertree Hill is the best choice as the cottages can sleep between two to six people.
Sierra Escape
Escape the crowds, and settle into your own little bush retreat. Sierra Escape is an ultra-luxe glamping tent, nestled on 110 acres of rolling hills deep in the Mudgee wine country. There are only tents on the property, each set within its own section of the property, so guests have complete privacy, especially when soaking in the outdoor freestanding bathtub.
The tents are Australian-made and well-insulated, so you can stay in the middle of winter or open the large windows and let the summer breeze flow through. Each tent is designed for two people and it’s an adults-only stay, so leave the kids at home. Evanslea is another homestay on the outskirts of Mudgee, sitting beside the Cudgegong River. Think of it as a lakehouse escape with landscaped gardens, a pool, and a fire pit. There’s a four-bedroom house available for families and groups, or romantic cottages perfect for two.

Wine is such a big part of Mudgee, so why not stay at a winery? Referred to as a ‘vinestay’, YEATES offers guests the chance to stay on the winery, in either a two-bedroom restored bank, a one-bedroom studio, or a loft. the property is solar-powered and has been constructed using energy efficient rammed earth, hardwood and corrugated iron, with rainwater tanks to collect water.
The Gate House (one-bedroom) is located right next to the cellar door and the studio loft occupies the top level of the cellar door. Guests can take in a sunset from the deck, which looks over the organically managed vines and retreat downstairs for all matters of dining and drinking.
Sleeping four, the Old Bank is a chic stay in nearby Rylstone. The home is lovingly decorated with simple, neutral colours, cosy beds and lounges, set against the occasional brick wall, and exudes country charm. If you’re looking for a stylish stay, the Old Bank is perfect.
Rosby Guesthouse
The Rosby Guesthouse is the epitome of a luxury country escape and no doubt one of the best accommodation options in Mudgee. Guests will find themselves immersed in a painting-like landscape, with rolling green pastures, cows grazing in the distance, and golden sunsets that ignite the sky and land.
