It’s a great day for fans of the iconic My Big Fat Greek Wedding, because a third instalment to the beloved franchise is on the way.
Nia Vardalos confirmed the news on her Instagram recently, and announced that she’s not only writing and starring in the third film, but also directing the feature.
“So, I have an announcement,” Vardalos said. “We are in Greece filming My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.”
Thanking fans for the “lovely messages”, and for their patience — My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 was released in 2016, and of course, the original film was released way back in 2002 — Vardalos said that she was getting ready to film.
“We’re filming in the beautiful Plaka of Athens, and I wanna teach you your first Greek word, which is σκηνοθέτης, and what that means is ‘director’,” she said. “And guess who the director is? It’s me!”
In the caption, Vardalos added: “Thank you to Playtone, Gold Circle, HBO and Focus! And much love and gratitude to you all for your support as we waited to film. Greece baby. Greece! ?? ? #Mybigfatgreekwedding3″
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 will mark Vardalos’ second credit as a director, after 2009’s I Hate Valentine’s Day.
Back in 2002, My Big Fat Greek Wedding premiered as a limited release in just 106 cinemas across the United States, but quickly became a huge critical and box office success. In fact, the film still holds the record for being the highest grossing romantic comedy of all-time., and even managed to score an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
The original film was directed by Joel Zwick, and follows Toula (Vardalos), a young Greek woman who falls in love with a non-Greek man (played by John Corbett), and struggles to get her family to accept him while she comes to terms with her heritage and cultural identity.
For the moment, plot, cast and release date details are being kept under wraps for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, but we’ll keep you posted as more details emerge.
