It’s only April, and I’m already craving a New Year’s party. Why? ‘Cause New Year’s Eve and the subsequent day are unironically the best holidays.
That’s right, I said it. I think that New Year’s is better than Christmas, better than Halloween, and slays harder than a dead queen’s birthday. Additionally, once I list my arguments, I hope you might get where I’m coming from.
New Year’s Eve and Day Are Resets
After every rubbish day or rough-as-guts night, I go to bed believing something. I fill my heart with hope that the next day will be better, that I’ll get a reset, that everything will be okay. And believing this helps me jump from bed each time 6:00am rolls around.
What’s more, I feel a similar way about New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. If my year’s a dumpster fire, like it was when 2021 kissed COVID, then a new year is a new start. I’ll dump my baggage on the steps of December 31 and sprint forward.
Now, it’s worth noting that I also mess with Christmas and most of our other holidays. I mean, what’s not to like about a day off? However, these holidays can’t reset me like New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day can. If I’m feeling bad before a British monarch b’day bash, it’s not like the Crown will help me feel better.
Let’s Celebrate the Passage of Time
Time stops for no one. It always marches forward. It will come, consume you, turn you into ash, and then turn everyone else into ash.
No shade, but most other holidays don’t really acknowledge this reality. They highlight the past. They’re about traditions, memories, and so on.
Meanwhile, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are just different. They don’t just ignore the passing of time, they embrace it. They’re about screaming a countdown into the ether. They’re about gobbling up bliss in a situation that we cannot control.
New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day challenge us. They ask every human not to fear the passage of time and instead celebrate it. Which is hard to dislike. And it’s why these hols are my faves.
What’s Open on New Year’s Eve and Day?
Hold onto your noggins, this is my final powerful point. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are great holidays, ‘cause the country doesn’t close down for them.
In 2022 , a whack of Woolworths, ALDI, and Coles’ shops were open on New Year’s Eve. Plus, in 2023, the very same joints were open on New Year’s Day.
So, if you needed some bread on these dates, you could score some bread. If you forgot to shop on December 30, you weren’t going to starve like a peasant.
Meanwhile, on Good Friday of 2023, both my local ALDI and Woolworths were closed. This meant that my breakfast was a couple of Easter eggs. Which, while fantastic, was far from a craving of hashbrowns.
Therefore, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are the best holidays. I humbly rest my case.
