Sofia Coppola has an impressive list of successful films under her belt and it looks like her next venture is going to be just that.
The upcoming film, On the Rocks, which will be released on Apple TV+ stars Parks and Rec’s Rashida Jones and comedic actor, Bill Murray.
Laura (Rashida Jones) thinks she’s happily hitched, but when her husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) starts logging late hours at the office with a new co-worker, Laura begins to fear the worst. She turns to the one man she suspects may have insight: her charming, impulsive father Felix (Bill Murray), who insists they investigate the situation. As the two begin prowling New York at night, careening from uptown parties to downtown hotspots, they discover at the heart of their journey lies their own relationship.
What follows is a sparkling comic adventure across the city – drawing father and daughter closer together despite one detour after another.
It’s an exuberant love letter to New York, a story about the clash of two generations and a comedy about how we see relationships differently from our parents.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Coppola said that she wanted to do something a “little bit lighter and more playful with a lot of heart and sincerity.”
“Felix is an old-world gentleman used to talking over martinis. The way he looks at women and relationships, he’s giving advice from his perspective, which is different from how Laura’s husband is, and she’s trying to see it from his view.”
This will be the first feature film Coppola and Murray have worked on since the award-winning Lost in Translation (2004) which won Coppola the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, while also scoring nominations for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Murray.
In an online discussion with 92Y and Annette Insdorf in April, she said On the Rocks “is Billy Murray and Rashida Jones”.
“They play father and daughter, and she’s married to Marlon Wayans, a successful businessman who is travelling a lot and has a beautiful assistant,” she said. [Rashida’s character] has suspicions. The dad, who’s kind of a sophisticated playboy, gets her paranoid because he’s seeing men through his point of view. It’s sort of the clash between the two generations and her being a young woman and he’s a gentleman of another generation.”
