It’s official, Oppenheimer has won Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars, marking the film’s seventh win of the night.
“I think any of us who make movies know you kind of dream of this moment,” producer Emma Thomas said upon accepting the award.
“The reason this movie was the movie it was is because of Chris Nolan,” she continued, praising the director who won his first-ever Oscar for Direction earlier in the ceremony.
The film has had an incredible night. Robert Downey Jr. won Best Supporting Actor for his work in the film, before Cillian Murphy himself took home Best Actor. Throughout the show, Oppenheimer also snagged wins for Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best Cinematography.
The Best Picture win is the final hurrah for the film, which has been dominating the award circuit all season.

The Road to Oppenheimer Winning Best Picture 2024
With the 2024 Academy Awards done and dusted, we’re also closing the book on the cultural phenomenon that was Barbenheimer. From the moment it was announced that Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie were set to be released in cinemas on the same day in July 2023, the Internet ran with the idea of these very different films being an ironic, yet somehow perfect, double feature. Thus, Barbenheimer was born.
Both films went on to become blockbuster box office successes, with Oppenheimer pulling in USD $957 million globally, and Barbie making a whopping USD $1.4 billion.
By the time award season came around, both films were performing well as nominations were announced. But as the season went along, it became clear that Oppenheimer was pulling ahead, and soon, its momentum was unstoppable.
Oppenheimer was awarded Best Motion Picture — Drama at the Golden Globes, Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards, Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Best Film at the BAFTAs.
Beyond that, Christopher Nolan has also swept the directing categories, picking up a Golden Globe, a Critics Choice Award, a BAFTA, and a Directors Guild Award for his efforts, and the film’s lead and supporting actors — Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr, respectively — have also picked up numerous awards along the way.
Congratulations, Oppenhomies!
