Every year, the colour experts at Pantone Color Institute comb the world looking at everything from new films and fashion, to popular travel destinations and travelling art collections, all in a bid to name the Pantone Color of the Year.
And this year, the team settled on PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri, a vibrant purple that’s a far cry from last year’s Color of the Year: gray.
“As we move into a world of unprecedented change, selection of Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue colour family,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.
“Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time with its violet red undertone, Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions.”
According to interior stylist and founder of Sydney-based interior styling company Unfolded, Camilla Ingall, the colour purple is also commonly associated with royalty, wealth, power and ambition. “These notions give us a sense of hope and also comfort in what’s next,” Ingall says.
So, how can we incorporate Very Peri into our own homes? Well, says Ingall, the best place to start is to work out how committed — if even at all — you are to following the trend.
“I truly believe it’s up to the individual and how much they wish to experiment,” she says. “Reading and absorbing what everyone else thinks can be overwhelming, and one person’s idea of incorporating trends could be, in this instance, sourcing a Very Peri-toned armchair, and that’s it. Others may want to style an entire bedroom or home office in a range of tones under the same colour category.”
Given trends are ever-changing, to ensure you aren’t constantly having to update your home to keep up with them, Ingall suggests generally integrating only a dash of the trends with your own style and taste. She says the most effective way to go about this is to use a visualisation mood board, which can help you envision the trending element in your space and then work out if you feel comfortable incorporating it into your home.
As for the specifics of how to add Veri Peri into your home, Ingall shares her tips below.
Bedroom
“A bedroom is a place for rest and retreat and the Very Peri is quite a punchy purple so needs to be applied delicately, such as with a textured paint like Dulux Textured Paint Finish, as well as with a pillow and throw. This image perfectly encompasses the other undertones of purple as mentioned above re: blue etc, while adding texture and depth through finishes and fabrics.”
Bathroom
“Bathrooms are a place to feel refreshed and rejuvenated. They can either embody a neutral tone on tone design that makes you feel calm and centered. Or, if you’re feeling brave and adventurous, you could opt for changing up the neutral tone on tone to a Very Peri-inspired finish.”
“This style experiments with unique tile sizes laid strategically to refine the individual areas of the bathroom i.e walls, bathtub, floor. It’s becoming more and more common for our clients to want the bathroom to be somewhat of a standout to the rest of the home and this is a great approach to this concept.”
Kitchen
“A kitchen is an area inspired by entertainment, family and new recipes to explore. Here, I would keep the Very Peri addition simple and tasteful (excuse the pun).
“Applying this colour as a feature wall paint or to the overhead cupboard / joinery (try a polyurethane finish painted in Very Peri) will look great and as long as the floor and other areas of the kitchen remain subtle and complimentary, the colour addition will offer character and charm without taking over the space.”
