Fans who have been anxiously awaiting the release of Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars film Rogue Squadron will, unfortunately, be waiting a bit longer thanks to the filmmaker’s hectic schedule.
Rogue Squadron, which is based loosely on the X-wing novel series, was originally intended to begin production in 2022, but will now be delayed meaning that the film’s release likely won’t be released on its intended date of December 22, 2023.
Jenkins is certainly in demand at the moment. The director, who is best known for helming 2017’s Wonder Woman and 2020’s Wonder Woman 1984, has confirmed that she will be directing the third instalment in the franchise.
“We’re super excited about Wonder Woman 3 Gal (Gadot), who is so bummed about not being here, who’s the busiest person in the world, with now three little kids and shooting,” said Jenkins at DC’s FanDome event back in October.
“We are all three very excited about some things coming up with Wonder Woman 3,″ she added coyly.
Jenkins, who also directed Monster which starred Charlize Theron, is also attached to a drama for Paramount about Cleopatra that will star Gadot in the title role. Due to scheduling conflicts, likely related to these projects, Rogue Squadron has been taken off of Disney’s production schedule, hopefully just for the time being.
The film was due to be the first big-screen outing for the Star Wars franchise since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Luckily, fans of the galaxy far, far away have plenty of small-screen options to satiate them in the meantime.
Some of the offerings on Disney+ both existing and upcoming include The Mandalorian plus the upcoming series that will see Ewan McGregor return in the iconic role of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Book of Boba Fett will make its debut on the streamer in December and a series focused on Ahsoka — the character played by Rosario Dawson in The Mandalorian — is also in the works. Hayden Christensen will return to the role of Anakin Skywalker in the latter project.
Star Wars: Visions — a ten-part anime series from Lucasfilm — should also be released soon, with the project being created by some of Japan’s leading anime studios. Additionally, the prequel series Andor, which features Diego Luna inhabiting the role of rebel spy Cassian Andor once again, should drop sometime in 2022.
All told, there are around 16 Lucasfilm projects in the pipeline for film and television for 2021 and beyond, so hopefully, news of Rogue Squadron‘s delay won’t come as too much of a blow.
