Last year, arch homewares were trending in interiors, but this year, it’s all about scalloped edges. We’ve spotted them on cushion covers, marble trays and even pendant light covers.
In Maison Balzac’s latest collection, scalloped edges feature on serving baskets and trays. Founder and designer of the Australian homewares brand, Elise Pioch Balzac, says she was inspired by antique plates and platters she’d seen in France that date back to the era of Napoleon III – the 1850s.
“They have these beautiful shapes and edges that we projected into modern time by making them in our eco-friendly, lightweight matte material,” she says. “Scalloped homewares can add playfulness and a Mediterranean touch to your home. They evoke the waves of the sea or the contour of shells, and breaks visual monotony.”
Scalloped plates and napkins also feature in the latest collection from another Australian brand, In The Roundhouse. Co-founder Alyce Tran says the style can add a fun, yet styled and elevated energy that’ll take the every day somewhere else. “We love feminine and whimsical tabletops, and the scallops just add that aesthetic to a tabletop,” Tran says.
At Australian homewares and furniture McMullin & Co., scalloped edges feature in the latest drop of lighting and furniture. Founder and creative director, Alice McMullin, says the brand has always had an affinity for soft curves and organic forms, so it was only natural to incorporate scalloped edges into its designs. The result, she says, is a gentle flow of organic simplicity.
The first piece with scalloped edges the brand did was a bed head, called Beatrix. After it became the brand’s best-selling bed head yet, a mirror, console and bedside table were designed with the style.
“The design detail easily works in different styles of home, whether Art Deco, coastal or more formal,” McMullin says. “We love how the curves can add a romantic and whimsical touch to any space to contrast rigid and strong lines, like hardwood.
