In what could prove to be one of the most epic big-screen reunions of recent years, past Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are reportedly going to be joining Tom Holland for the next instalment in the superhero franchise, Spider-Man 3.
Maguire’s involvement will ultimately depend on an agreement being made between Sony Pictures and Marvel Entertainment, but so far things are looking good for the film which is slated for release on December 17, 2021.
Also set to make a comeback for Spider-Man 3 will be Kirsten Dunst as MJ, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Jamie Foxx as Electro and Alfred Molina as supervillain Doctor Octopus.
Like I said: epic.
Jon Watts is returning to direct his third instalment which will explore the Spider-Man multiverse, just as the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse did.
Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori and Marisa Tomei will all reprise their roles in the upcoming film with Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange stepping in to provide some mentorship to Holland’s Peter Parker.
The pic will have big shoes to fill as its predecessor, Spider-Man: Far from Home, made more than $1 billion at the global box office – becoming the first Spider-Man film to achieve that milestone and Sony’s highest-grossing film ever.
Revenue like that is sorely needed after the events of 2020, which saw the film industry grind to a halt as Covid-19 lockdowns prevented new productions and scheduled releases from going ahead.
Big budget blockbusters like A Quiet Place 2 and the latest 007 film, No Time to Die, both had their release dates postponed until 2021 while Christopher Nolan’s time-bending Tenet was delayed three times before opening in August and Wonder Woman 1984 will finally hit theatres on December 26 after its original June debut was pushed.
Presumably, production of the third instalment in Jon Watts’ trilogy will also depend on how the US is able to control its growing pandemic problem, but just knowing this reunion is on the books is enough to tide us over for now.
