What is a ‘hotel apartment’, you ask? It’s an apartment with a hotel experience. In the case of The Bonobo By Raes, a yet-to-launch new property in Byron, it’s to be thought of owning a slice of Brisbane’s The Calile Hotel or Victoria’s Jackalope Hotel.
The property, set to open in late 2024, will be by the same owners as Raes, the iconic hotel and restaurant in Byron, as well as a collaboration with development group Podia and the award-winning architects of Brisbane’s The Calile Hotel, Richards and Spence.
It’ll house 41 apartments for short and extended stays, ranging from two bedrooms to four, plus a ground-floor lobby bar, another dining concept, retail spaces for local brands, and a wellness venue. A pool and deck will be available for residents and hotel guests to use on the rooftop.
Marty McCaig, General Manager of Raes, says he hopes the property becomes a new sculptural landmark in the centre of Byron and a place for locals and visitors to the area to enjoy.
“Inspired by Byron’s historic buildings, the façade will feature modernist brick express, which will be authentic and timeless,” he says. “This will be anchored by a landscaped central courtyard that embraces natural touches and reflects the beauty of Byron’s rainforests and greenery of the hinterland.”
As for how The Bonobo will differ from Raes, which is known for its warm and attentive service, and iconic hotel enriched with history and character, McCaig says that though the service philosophy will remain, the new property will have its own personality that’ll shine through.
“A little more playful in its approach, the hotel will embrace modern technology and a sense of place that is uniquely Byron,” McCaig says. “The guest experience is at the heart of what we do, along with community accessibility.”
The Bonobo’s location in the heart of town will allow it to support and engage with the local community, which is the true essence of the relaxed coastal lifestyle, says McCaig. It’ll this into its offering, from the food and drink to its wellness program.
McCaig says the aim of The Bonobo’s to create a thriving precinct that people feel connected to and one that will leave a lasting impression.
“We want to create a place that evokes the senses, a place to escape and be inspired, with the promise you will leave feeling lighter on your feet from the day you arrived,” he says.
