Last night’s episode of The Masked Singer was a rollercoaster of emotions, and the big reveal left fans in awe. Who was the voice behind Bad Avocado, the mysterious brunch-themed singer? It turns out, it was none other than Summer Warne, daughter of the late cricketing legend Shane Warne. And her performance was anything but ‘guacward’.
Bad Avocado wowed the audience with a touching rendition of Coldplay’s Yellow, going head-to-head with Space Fairy on Steppenwolf’s Born to Be Wild. The guessing panel, featuring Mel B, Dave Hughes, Chrissie Swan, and Abbie Chatfield, was stumped, throwing out guesses from Michelle Payne to Jacqui Lambie and even Alyssa Healy.
But the moment of truth came, and Summer emerged from beneath the avocado mask, leaving everyone gobsmacked.
After months of keeping her identity a closely guarded secret, Summer was relieved to finally come clean.
“It was so good to finally get it out there and, you know, for everyone to see the show,” she told POPSUGAR Australia over the phone. “I’ve been keeping this secret for like three months.”
Summer Almost Turned Down The Masked Singer
Summer’s decision to join The Masked Singer wasn’t without its doubts.
“My insecurity has got the best of me, and I was just kind of like, ‘I can’t sing, I’ve never sung properly before, I’m not a celebrity, and, you know, it’s celebrities under masks, and no one’s gonna know who I am,” she admitted.
But what motivated her to take the leap? It was a touching tribute to her late father.
“I did it for Dad, and I just thought that he would be really proud of me,” she explained.
Singing for her dad is something that holds a special place in Summer’s heart.
“There’s videos of my dad and me singing, and he would be filming it going, ‘Come on, sing this song. OK, now another one, full power, full voice this time’… You could hear Dad’s voice in the background,” she shared.
Her favourite moment from the show was when she sang Coldplay’s Yellow as a tribute to her father.
“It would have been ‘Yellow,’ singing Dad’s song because that was kind of like my tribute to him, and, you know, singing for him,” she said.
The Show Was a Massive Turning Point
Summer admitted The Masked Singer played an unexpected and pivotal role in her life. It’s only been a year since her father’s passing, and the 21-year-old admitted to feeling “a bit lost” during that time.
“I lost my way for a bit and I just kind of lost everything that I loved about life,” she said. “This was kind of the stepping stone for me to be like, ‘You know what, I just want to carry on and kind of do what makes me happy and what made Dad happy’.”
The Masked Singer became a pivotal moment for her.
“I think this was really a stepping stone for me to be like, ‘You can do it when you believe in yourself’, and sometimes you just need that little push,” Summer added.
Summing up her experience, Summer emphasised, “I went out there and I tried my hardest, and, you know, I’m 21 years old, and I think if anyone got given this opportunity, they would want to do it. This is just such an amazing opportunity. And I want people to know that I don’t think I’m a celebrity. My dad was the celebrity.”
The Masked Singer Australia continues Monday at 7.30pm on 10 and 10 Play.
