Fans were disappointed to learn that Splendour in the Grass had been postponed until 2022, but the good news was that the festival headliners — Gorillaz, Tyler, The Creator, and The Strokes were all still able to make the rescheduled dates.
Now, in even better news, New York indie rockers The Strokes will be playing a couple of sideshows during their Australian visit, marking their first time to our shores in ten years.
Local bands The Chats and The Lazy Eyes will join The Strokes as the supporting acts, with the shows taking place at Melbourne’s John Cain Arena on Tuesday, 26th July and Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on Thursday, 28th July.
The Strokes — which consist of singer Julian Casablancas, guitarists Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr., bassist Nikolai Fraiture, and drummer Fabrizio Moretti — first came onto the scene in 1998 but their debut album, Is This It, didn’t drop until 2001. Over the past two decades, they have released six albums, winning the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album for 2021’s The New Abnormal.
The Strokes aren’t the only ones making the most of their time down under, with Gorillaz also announcing some sideshows after Splendour.
The virtual band, created by Blur’s Damon Albarn, will be performing at Melbourne’s John Cain Arena on Sunday, July 24 and Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on Tuesday, July 26.
The shows will mark Gorillaz’ first shows on Aussie soil in more than a decade so fans can no doubt look forward to live performances of their surprise Meanwhile EP plus albums The Now Now and Humanz.
Ticketholders for 2021’s postponed Splendour in the Grass festival will have their tickets honoured at the 2022 event, while tickets for The Strokes will be on sale to the general public from Tuesday 9 November via Secret Sounds.
Tickets for Gorillaz are on sale now, also via Secret Sounds.
