An American rapper, a singer who got her start on MySpace and an exploration into Australia’s red-light district are set to feature on the Vivid Sydney 2024 line-up.
Australia’s largest event, Vivid Sydney will take over the city from Friday, May 24 to Saturday, June 15, this year, exploring the theme ‘Humanity’, through pillars light, music, ideas and food. The theme will delve into topics of love, kindness, compassion and creativity, showcased with interactive experiences and events over the 23-day program.
“Humanity is at the core of everything we do, and this year, Vivid Sydney is diving deep into what makes us uniquely human,” said Vivid Sydney Festival Director Gill Minervini in a press release.
The curated program explores the human spirit and was designed to foster connections, spark imagination, and showcase the multitude of ways creativity enriches our lives. Events take place at Circular Quay, Sydney Opera House, The Rocks, State Library of NSW, Walsh Bay, Barangaroo, Darling Harbour, UTS, Carriageworks, and Royal Botanic Garden.
Highlights of Vivid Sydney 2024 include 40km-long laser beams projected from the city’s tallest structure, Sydney Tower, Vivid Fire Kitchen returning in a new space and the 2023 Archibald Prize winner Julia Gutman transforming Sydney Opera House for Lighting of the Sails.
Australian act Budjerah, American rapper Mos Def and French duo Air will headline Vivid Music. Sky Ferreira, Mallrat, Deerhoof, Jen Cloher and No Fixed Address will also perform. The festival will also feature an exploration of sex work in Australia’s red-light district.
Part of Vivid Ideas, ‘A Thousand Ways: An Encounter’ will foster connections with strangers, while ‘Shifting Perspectives’ will be an immersive dance and art installation. Guests can also join influential Australians for film screenings and discussions at Golden Age Cinema, which will house the ‘Golden Age of Humanity’.
Last year, the festival experienced its largest attendance and visitor expenditure on record, with more than 3.48 million attendees generating more than $206 million in visitor expenditure.
“This year’s festival will have a variety of free and cost-effective events on offer to provide many opportunities for people to come together and celebrate,” said John Graham, Minister for Jobs and Tourism, Minister for the Arts, Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy.
