Update:

Anna Wintour, Vogue editor-in-chief and long-time Met Gala chairwoman, has announced the cancellation of this year’s Costume Institute spring 2020 exhibition, which opens every year with the star-studded Met Gala.

“Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, About Time, and the opening night gala, will not take place on the date scheduled,” Wintour wrote in a statement on Monday, March 16.

Currently, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is closed according to US recommendations, that request no gatherings with 50 people or more take place.

Original story:

Last year’s ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ theme was one of the Met Gala’s most memorable, but 2020 is set to be a stellar year for fashion on the red carpet with the theme for next year’s ball announced as ‘About Time: Fashion and Duration’.

The Metropolitan Museum took to Twitter to announce the theme for the 2020 exhibition, inspired by French philosopher Henri Bergson’s concept of la durée, or duration.

“The Costume Institute’s spring 2020 exhibition will trace more than a century and a half of fashion — from 1870 to the present — along a disruptive timeline,” the announcement reads.

And while last year’s theme invited a rainbow of colours (the brighter, the better), 2020’s exhibition, which coincides with The Met’s 150th anniversary, will showcase the transcendence of style with around 160 outfits almost exclusively in black.

“A linear chronology of fashion comprised of black ensembles will run through the exhibition reflecting the progressive timescale of modernity, and bringing into focus the fast, fleeting rhythm of fashion,” the announcement statement reveals.

Interspersed throughout will be a “series of counter-chronologies composed of white ensembles that predate or postdate those in black, but relate to one another through shape, motif, material, pattern, technique, or decoration.”

The Costume Institute’s spring 2020 exhibition will run from May 7 to September 7, and as always, the annual invite-only gala fundraiser will see Hollywood’s finest celebrate the theme with what is undoubtedly the biggest fashion event of the year a few days ahead of opening.

In 2020, the gala will be held on May 4.

Anna Wintour is hosting once again, and this year she’ll be sharing co-chair duties with Emma Stone, Nicolas Ghesquière of Louis Vuitton, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Meryl Streep.
