Wait, What Date Is Father’s Day Celebrated in Australia This Year?

Father's Day 2023

Father’s Day is a day dedicated to appreciating the father figure in your life. But whether it’s a lunch or dinner you’re wanting to take him to, or a thoughtful gift you’re wanting to get him, you’ll want to plan ahead.

Doing so will ensure you’re able to reserve a spot where you want – most popular restaurants book up quickly on Father’s Day — and give you enough time to choose the right gift for him. Bonus: you might even get it on sale.

That said, when is Father’s Day this year? Well, for those in Australia, it’s celebrated on the first Sunday in September, which, in 2023, means it falls on Sunday, September 3. Next year, it’ll actually fall on the first day of the month, Sunday, September 1, 2024.

If you didn’t know, Australia shares its Father’s Day date with New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. In other parts of the world, including in the US and UK, Father’s Day is always celebrated on the third Sunday in June. In Spain, Italy and Portugal, it’s always on March 19.

So, why is Father’s Day celebrated in Australia on a different day than most of the rest of the world? Some report it to be because of “holiday fatigue”, with experts claiming consumers tire of holidays and need time to recover.

Australia celebrates the Easter long weekend, Anzac Day and Queen’s Birthday all around April and June, so adding Father’s Day in around this time could mean we’re too distracted to spend on a gift. Meaning businesses wouldn’t be making as much from us.

Another popular theory is that having Father’s Day in September is more convenient for Australians. It coincides with the start of Spring, a great time to get the father figure in your life gifts that he might need updated or not even have for the warmer weather, like sporting, camping and fishing gear, or sunnies or summer clothes.
