Netflix’s Wednesday has been the show on everyone’s lips since it dropped November 23 this year.
The Tim Burton-directed Wednesday Addams spin-off series based on the iconic Addams Family stars Jenna Ortega (Scream, X) as Wednesday Addams, Luis Guzmán as her dad Gomez, Catherine Zeta-Jones as her mum Morticia and Isaac Ordonez as her brother Pugsley. Christina Ricci, who famously played Wednesday in the 90s Addams Family movies, also appears in the show, playing Wednesday’s teacher at Nevermore Academy, Ms. Thornhill.
But where is Nevermore Academy located in real life? And where was the rest of the series filmed? Turns out, the show was filmed on 70 sets across six sound stages and various locations in Romania, including a castle that’s open to the public to visit.
“It was amazing to come here to Romania because it just weirdly fit into the Addams Family world,” Burton said in a press brief via House Beautiful. “Trying to make Romania look like Vermont was an interesting challenge, but we felt like we found lots of new locations.”

We share the castle’s location, along with other shooting spots in the series, ahead.
Cantacuzino Castle
Nevermore Academy in real-life is Cantacuzino Castle in the small mountain town of Bușteni in Romania. Built in 1911, the Neo-Romanian style castle was the summer home of Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino who commissioned it, according to Conde Nast Traveller.
“After World War II, it was owned for a period by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, before undergoing restoration and opening to the public,” the publication writes. “These days, as well as the many sculptures and works of art displayed across the grounds and castle interior, there are two restaurants and an adventure park for little visitors.”
The location is available for events like weddings, and you can visit to tour the castle, art gallery and sculpture exhibition, according to House Beautiful.
The show also used Bușteni as the location for scenes supposed to take place near Nevermore. These exterior shots took place in Gara Regala, the town’s train station, once reserved for the Royal Family and its guests.
Bucharest, Romania
Next on the shooting location list is the capital of Romania: Bucharest. In true Hollywood style, the exteriors of Nevermore Academy were shot 137kms away from where the indoor scenes were filmed — at Casa Monteoru, an 1870s-built property in Bucharest.
The crew used Bucharest Botanical Garden for Nevermore’s greenhouse scenes. The garden’s 18 hectares of land were officially designated as such in 1884 and opened to the public in 1891.
Wednesday is streaming now on Netflix.
