Since publishing this story, Network Ten has announced the death of MasterChef Australia judge Jock Zonfrillo on April 30, 2023. MasterChef Australia Secrets and Surprises will now premiere on Sunday, May 7, with the full support of Zonfrillo’s family.
MasterChef Australia: Secrets and Surprises is finally here! With a new season of Australia’s favourite cooking competition upon us, it’s time to get to know all the new faces who are set to compete on MasterChef Australia 2023.
One of the hopeful home cooks joining the MasterChef Australia 2023 cast is Phil Conway, a fitness studio manager and instructor from Galway, Ireland.
Phil’s Love for Food, Fitness, and Wine
Phil is passionate about food, fitness, and wine. Although he was born in Ireland, he moved to Melbourne 12 years ago, which first sparked his love for food.
After losing weight in his 20s, Phil became dedicated to fitness, which led him to pursue a career in the fitness industry. However, during the pandemic, he couldn’t train his clients and rediscovered his love for cooking. He spent most of his time in the kitchen, which gave him clarity about his life’s direction.
In 2022, Phil took a month-long leave to learn traditional recipes and the wine-making process in the Veneto wine region in Italy. He also spent time with winemakers in France and the USA.
His passion for wine and wine education is evident, and he dreams of opening his own wine bar, with a focus on French and Italian fare.

What Phil’s Bringing to MasterChef Australia 2023
Phil is highly competitive and believes that hard work trumps all. His plan for the MasterChef kitchen is to take on the judges‘ feedback, but to make sure he’s having fun along the way.
Phil’s food idols include Gordon Ramsay, Peter Gilmore, Daniel Humm, and MasterChef Australia alumni Pete Campbell. Phil’s most memorable dining experience was at Humm’s Eleven Madison Park restaurant in New York, proving the transformative power of dining.
With his love for good food, good wine, and hard work, expect to see Phil bring his A-game to the kitchen.
MasterChef Australia: Secrets and Surprises premieres Sunday, May 7 at 7.30pm, only on 10 and 10 Play on Demand.
